Four reasons why ONE's sixth annual Gala & Awards was one for the record books
On November 14, 2016, ONE held their 6th annual Gala & Awards event at the beautiful Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington, DC.
Here are the top four items that made the evening one for the record books:
1) RECORD ATTENDENCE
Over 200 Marriott LGBT and straight ally associates and invited guests, clients and partners gathered in the newly renovated Grand Ballroom at the Mayflower Hotel. Attendees at the $95-a-plate event were treated to a three-course plated meal, sampling the best of creative cuisine and desserts from the hotel chefs.
2) CEO ARNE SORENSON POPPED BY
It was the surprise of the evening and one that no one will forget. The President and CEO of Marriott International, Arne Sorenson, stopped by the event to say a few words of unity and encouragement to attendees. He provided his thoughts on the recent US presidential election results and how the country needs to come together, but hold the new administration accountable for the diversity and inclusion movement that Marriott strongly supports as a part of our company culture.
3) KATE KENDELL PROVIDED A FIRERY KEYNOTE
It was with broad emotions that ONE welcomed the executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights to the stage as the keynote address. Kate followed Arne's uplifting remarks which was preceded by emotional and passion-driven remarks from ONE's outgoing Chairperson, Bruce Rohr. Kate stepped up to the plate and hit a home run with the audience. One of the standout statements from the evening was when she quoted Dr. King: "Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love."
4) AN AWARD OF RECOGNITION FOR LEADERSHIP
Bruce Rohr, ONE Chairperson, earlier announced 2016 would be his last term leading ONE. His opening remarks spoke the massive growth of ONE as it started out as an idea with 15 founding members that now has almost 2,000 around the world. At the time, he wasn't even sure if it would be successful. Bruce has been leading the group as Chairperson for the last 6 years since its inception. He was provided an achievement award for his outstanding leadership presented by the ONE Council on behalf of all members.
