ONE Charter & Bylaws

I.  General Policies

  1. ONE is the official Company-recognized Associate Network for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Straight Ally associates of Marriott International.

  2. ONE shall not discriminate against anyone with disabilities or on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, gender, religion, physical or mental handicap, race, color, age, marital or parental status, national origin, political affiliation, or military service.

  3. ONE shall honor the privacy preferences of each member; see Addendum II.

  4. All official events and activities for ONE shall reflect at least one of the three main areas of the group Mission Statement:  Associate, Customer, and Community.

  5. ONE is a self-funding group with no financial support from outside the membership of ONE.

  6. Chapters of ONE organized outside of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, will be considered sub-chapters of the main/lead Washington, D.C. Headquarters Chapter.

  7. ONE membership will be made up of the general membership, committee chairpersons, and an elected Council of Officers.

  8. ONE is a not-for-profit association, organized for the purpose of fostering community among associates and increasing a diversity mindset to include LGBT issues.  Refer to the Articles of Organization for specifics.

  9. Members may register complaints by contacting a member of the ONE Council, which will address the complaint and provide a response to the complainant within 30 days.

II. Membership

  1. Membership in ONE is free; however, members are encouraged to pay an annual donation to cover administrative and operating costs and organization activities that meet the objectives of ONE’s mission statement.

    1. The suggested donation amount will be determined for the next calendar year by the ONE Council as one of its first orders of business following the annual election.

  2. Upon gaining membership, the new member will be contacted by the Treasurer regarding membership guidelines, the ONE site privacy controls, and the requested donation.

  3. No person shall be denied membership to ONE due to lack of payment for activities and events affiliated with ONE.

  4. To become a member of ONE, including any of its Chapters, a person must officially register via the ONE website.

  5. No member shall engage in any activity in the name of ONE without approval by a majority vote of the ONE Council.

  6. Active employees of Marriott International and who work at the Headquarters buildings, satellite buildings, or any Marriott properties or offices may be members of ONE.

  7. Active employees of franchise companies affiliated with Marriott International and who currently work at a Marriott property or have a Marriott-affiliated role may be members of ONE.

  8. Active employees designated as consultants and who are currently working with Marriott International may be members of ONE.

  9. Associates who terminate employment with Marriott International, any franchise affiliated with Marriott International, or their employer (for consultants), must remove themselves from the ONE website or must inform the ONE Treasurer (who will remove them).

  10. If a member chooses to terminate membership with ONE, they must inform the Treasurer of ONE.

  11. All ONE members shall adhere to the standards of member behavior, as stipulated in Addendum III.

  12. Any member may be removed from ONE at any time, with or without cause, by a majority vote of the ONE Council.

  13. An audit of membership will be completed annually to verify current employment, or working affiliation with Marriott (for franchise and consultant members).


III. Meetings

  1. General membership meetings for ONE shall be held at least quarterly and are open to all members.
  2. Guests and potential members may be invited to attend a general membership meeting.

  3. General membership meetings will be called by a member of the ONE Council.

  4. ONE Council and committee chairpersons may conduct additional meetings outside of the general meetings, with the results of such meetings reported at the general meetings.

  5. Meeting location and date (day of week and week position within the month) may vary from month to month and will be communicated on the ONE website.

  6. An official annual membership meeting for ONE that includes all Chapter members shall occur each year in the Washington, DC area.  Members will be alerted of this meeting date via email at least 90 days in advance of the meeting date.


IV. Voting

  1. Voting rights exist for all members of ONE, with each member allowed to vote once in each election of the ONE Council.
  2. Voting for the ONE Council may be done in-person at the annual election meeting or electronically via the ONE website.  For electronic voting, the Secretary will designate a due date and time by when all votes must be submitted.

  3. Voting within committees must be a majority vote among the members of that committee.

V. The ONE Council and Election Process

  1. The members of ONE shall elect 6 officers to The ONE Council:  Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications Director, and Fundraising Chairperson.
  2. All ONE Council officers must be members of the Washington, DC Chapter and must be associates/employees of Marriott International.  Officers may not be from a franchise company or a consultant with the company.

  3. Terms for officers are as follows, with the election of the Chair and Vice Chairperson staggered:

    1. Chairperson:  2 years
    2. Vice Chairperson:  2 years

    3. Secretary:  1 year

    4. Treasurer:  1 year

    5. Communications Director:  1 year

    6. Fundraising Chair:  1 year

  4. ONE members shall self-nominate or nominate candidates from among themselves by a designated date prior to the ONE annual meeting.
  5. The nomination and voting processes will be managed by either the current Chairperson or Vice Chairperson who is not up for election in that cycle, which shall be hereafter referred to as the Election Proctor.

  6. Election of the open ONE Council positions will be performed via electronic, secret ballot of members through a web-based survey tool.  Designated times for the nomination period and the voting period will be announced by the Election Proctor.

  7. The tallying of votes shall be the responsibility of the Election Proctor, and this must be witnessed by at least three members of ONE not up for election.

  8. The announcement of the winners of the open positions shall be made by the Election Proctor within 24 hours of the closing of the voting period.

  9. Any officer may be removed from the ONE Council, with or without cause, by a majority vote of the membership of ONE (in-person and electronically through the ONE website).

  10. The ONE Council shall be responsible for making any decisions that could impact significant changes to ONE (significant is defined as anything that impacts the direction of ONE) or a change (amendments or addendums) to the Bylaws.

  11. The ONE Council shall be responsible for receiving and resolving internal complaints raised by members.


VI. Filling Vacant Positions

  1. When an officer resigns out of cycle, transfers to another Chapter, or gains employment outside of Marriott International, he/she shall provide a written notice of resignation to the Chairperson at least two (2) weeks prior to vacating his/her position when possible.
  2. Vacant positions will be temporarily filled with an interim member appointed by the Chairperson for the remainder of the designated term until a special election can be held to fill the vacancy.

  3. Special elections can be opted to be fulfilled by electronic vote only, if the ONE Council chooses.

  4. In the event the Chairperson is resigning, the Vice Chairperson will assume the Chairperson’s responsibilities for the remainder of the term.  A new Vice Chairperson will be nominated and elected by members at the next general membership meeting.


VII. Committees

  1. The ONE Council shall be a permanent governing body and consist of the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications Director, and Fundraising Chairperson.
  2. Any member of ONE may recommend to The ONE Council that a committee be formed.

  3. Any member of ONE may volunteer to be a committee Chairperson.

  4. All committee Chairs serve a minimum one-year term, in cases where the committee exists beyond one year, and are elected by their committee members by a simple majority at the first committee meeting in January (or at the first meeting of the year).

  5. The Chairperson of the Headquarters Liaisons Committee shall coordinate with the ONE Chairperson on all Headquarters meetings, interactions, and communications relating to ONE, while serving as the main liaison between ONE and Headquarters.


Addendum to the Bylaws


I.  Chapters

  1. Members of ONE who are located outside of the main/lead Chapter in Washington, DC, may submit a request to The ONE Council to form a Chapter of ONE.
    1. The ONE Council may deny the formation of a local Chapter of ONE.
    2. The ONE Council may revoke the existence of a local Chapter of ONE.

  2. To form a Chapter, there must be at least five (5) registered members in the Chapter.
  3. Upon receiving approval to form from The ONE Council, Chapters must elect a Chapter Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, and Secretary/Treasurer by a simple majority vote of Chapter members.

  4. Chapters must hold a general membership Chapter meeting at least twice a year, outside of any social events, and report their activities to the ONE Council.

  5. Chapter Chairpersons will make every attempt to attend the Annual ONE Meeting whenever possible.  If they cannot attend, they can send a delegate in their place or virtually attend the meeting, when possible.

  6. All Chapter-sponsored activities must be communicated in writing to The ONE Council for their review and approval at least three (3) weeks in advance of their being held.  The ONE Council may deny that a requested activity be held.

  7. All prospective Chapter members must first join the ONE website in order to be eligible to join their local Chapter and attend meetings.


II. Respect for Member Privacy

  1. Your Privacy – The ONE community respects its members' privacy.  None of your personal information will be posted on any blogs unless you post it yourself. 
  2. Guard Your Privacy – Please keep your personal information personal.  If you wish to share personal information beyond what appears in your ONE profile with another member of the community, do so via e-mail or some other private message. 

  3. Guard Other Members' Privacy – Please do not post the personal information of other members of ONE in blogs.  This information will be removed by ONE site Administrators.  Please also do not share the identities or other personal information of ONE members to those outside the ONE membership.

  4. Don't Make Personal Attacks – ONE encourages a healthy exchange of opinions.  If you disagree with another member, please challenge the opinion or idea, not the person.  Personal attacks, insults, and "flaming" will not be tolerated.  You may challenge others' points of view and opinions, but please do so respectfully and thoughtfully 

  5. Dealing with Personal Attacks – If you feel that you are being personally attacked or harassed, contact a ONE Council member. Please do not retaliate or respond directly.

III. Standards of Member Behavior

It is the goal of ONE to maintain a community that is respectful of various views and opinions and is appropriate for its members. With this in mind, ONE cannot permit, and will at the discretion of the ONE Council remove members, or their posts or links that in our reasonable judgment:

  1. are obscene or promote prejudice, bigotry, hatred, or physical harm of any kind against any group or individual;
  2. harass or advocate harassment of another person or organization;

  3. contain nudity, violence, or offensive subject matter;

  4. promote information that you know is false or misleading, or promotes illegal activities or conduct that is abusive, threatening, obscene, defamatory, or libelous;

  5. exploit people in a sexual, violent, or other manner not respectful of human rights;

  6. further or promote any criminal activity or enterprise, or provide instructional information about illegal activities, such as making or buying illegal products or violating someone's privacy;

  7. solicit passwords or personal information from others for commercial or unlawful purposes;

  8. knowingly introduce viruses, worms, harmful code, or Trojan horses on the Internet; or

  9. involve commercial activities and/or sales without the ONE Council’s prior written consent, such as contests, sweepstakes, solicitation of donations, bartering, advertising, or pyramid schemes.
